One Big Roof

A new program at One Big Roof, offered on the third Friday of every month, (3/16/2012, 4/20/2012, 5/18/2012, 6/15/2012) will help individuals strengthen the connection to the art of nourishment through various gentle means including meditation, movement, relaxation, and teachings. For anyone whose eating behaviors or thoughts are interfering with their daily living or their health. Each session will begin with a brief meditation, followed by a teaching, a body-centering experience, and a closure. This is neither a support nor therapy group, but hopes to help close the gap between different existing services and to provide a safe space for those who are often dealing with these issues alone. Hosted by Pierre Zimmerman, Buddhist Chaplain and Health Facilitator; Ann Saffi-Biasetti, Certified Social Worker and Yoga Therapist; and Elyn Zimmerman, Nutritionist. From 7:30 to 9 PM. Free - donations gladly accepted. RSVP in advance if possible.

Dan Berggren and Ed Lowman have cooked up quite a tasty blend of blues, traditional folk, new originals and old-time string band music with an Adirondack flavor. It�s fresh, served up hot, and there is still room for pie! For over thirty years, Dan has been collecting, writing and singing music of Adirondack mountains where he was raised. As an award-winning educator and musician, he has released over a dozen albums and performed with guitar and banjo in concert halls and coffeehouses from Kentucky to Michigan, Belgium to Bulgaria, and Zimbabwe to Transylvania. Ed Lowman�s rock-solid bass playing and down-home fiddling are known throughout the North Country and New England. Not only has he performed as one of the infamous Will Dicker Boys and with the high-energy band Quickstep, Ed has organized and played for countless contra and square dances. Join Dan and Ed for some strong songs, funny sing-a-longs, tender ballads, and tunes that jump.

Visits to the County Clerk�s office, County Surrogate Court and County Historian�s office will help familiarize you with resources available at the county level. Basic genealogy forms and other resource materials will be provided. Pat Peck, an experienced local genealogist, will lead the seminar. Join us as we learn about The Albany Institute of History and Art's upcoming exhibition The Mystery of Albany Mummies beginning in September 2013. The mummies and parts of their coffins have been on continuous view for more than 100 years, thrilling four generations of visitors. This exhibition will reunite the mummy�s coffin pieces and bring ancient Egyptian objects to Albany from collections around the world. Using images of art and artifacts, staff will share what they have learned about the world in which our mummies lived and worked 3,000 years ago. Woody Guthrie was born on July 14th, 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma. Over the decades, his songs have run around the world like a fast train on a well-oiled track. They've become the folk song standards of the nation, known and performed in many languages throughout the world. Pretty Boy Floyd, Pastures of Plenty, Hard Travelin', Deportees, Roll On Columbia, Vigilante Man and This Land Is Your Land are among the hundreds of his songs that have become staples in the canon of American music. The special guest at Caffe Lena's celebration of Woody will be Texas troubadour Butch Hancock, called, "a raspy-voiced West Texas mystic with an equal affinity for romantic border balladry and Zen paradox," by Rolling Stone Magazine. Butch's annual tributes to Woody in Austin and Dallas have been popular with Texas folkies for years, and it's an honor to have someone so closely associated with Woody's legacy to lead our celebration. Rounding out the program are five high-spirited, Woody-lovin' bands from the Capital Region which we will be ready to announce shortly!

Join the Prevention Council for our inaugural Tuff eNuff Challenge and turn your standard 5K run into a fun, muddy adventure for families and athletes alike! Mirroring our mission of helping families navigate the challenges of adolescence, the Tuff eNuff Challenge will present a variety of obstacles that stand in the way of success. Crawl under, hurdle over, and wade through these obstacles to victory. There will be two courses - one for kids and one for adults. Either way, prepare to get muddy and have a ball! Costumes and enthusiasm encouraged - especially for adventurous teens who'll have plenty of time to clean off the mud before prom night. There will also be food vendors, bounce houses, and other fun activities for spectators. The 2012 Saratoga Lions Duathlon will be held at Saratoga Casino and Raceway on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at 8AM. Race participants will tackle a 5k run, followed by a 30k bike ride, and ending with another 5k run. Race start time is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Participants can be individual, two-person teams or three-person teams. Area businesses can also participate with a three-person team in the Corporate Challenge category. Early-bird registration fees are $55.00 per individual, $80.00 per two-person team, and $100 per three-person team until 05/10/12 (mail-in entries must be postmarked by 5/10/12). Pre-registration fees from May 10 through May 24 are $60.00 per individual, $90.00 per two-person team, and $115 per three-person team. On the day of the race, entry fees are $65.00 per individual, $100.00 per two-person team and $130 per three-person team. Free shirts will be provided to the first 300 entrants. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age category and results will be computerized. For the past 18 years, Brookside Museum has hosted a benefit concert to raise money for education programs that serve about 4,000 children each year. On June 1, 2012 popular local musicians in their band SIDETRACKED will be performing at the museum to support programs such as Sheep to Shawl and Native New York. SIDETRACKED is a diverse musical collaboration of young and old. The group is comprised of five members, ranging in age from thirty something to closing in on sixty. All members contribute equally to an energy and a sound that most listeners just can�t seem to get enough of. They all truly believe that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Their unique blend of voices and instruments majestically recreates the sound of all of your favorite rock and roll tunes from the 70s and 80s. Our behind the scenes tours, offered in cooperation with the New York Racing Association, are available from June to October. This walking tour covers approximately 1 mile and lasts for 1.5 hours. The cost is $10 for non-members and $5 for members. This price includes admission to the Museum after the tour. Sturdy walking shoes are suggested! Nugent will do readings from her book, They Live On: Saying Goodbye to Mom and Dad that reveal our universal emotions when it comes to end-of-life issues. The 13th USUK Iron Symposium will take place for the first time at two venues: Salem Art Works for the United States component, and the Scottish Sculpture Workshop for the United Kingdom component. Internationally selected artists will produce work in cast iron with experimental and traditional sand molds using a coke fired iron cupola furnace. In addition to artists' presentations, panels and technical demonstrations, artists learn from each other by worthing together in the critically engaged environment created by the symposium and its unique sites.

Each session will begin with a brief meditation, followed by a teaching, a body-centering experience, and a closure. This is neither a support nor therapy group, but hopes to help close the gap between different existing services and to provide a safe space for those who are often dealing with these issues alone. Since 2002 Saratoga Hospital Foundation has been raising money for its Nursing Scholarship Program and thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have been able to grant 36 employees the opportunity to return to school for their nursing degree. One of the steps we have taken in order to sustain our atmosphere of excellence in nursing care is to raise funds for our Nursing Scholarship Program through the FOX23 News Golf Invitational. Be part of the over 400 golfers, guests and volunteers and the area�s most established and respected charity golf event. The 2011 event raised $127,000! This year we were in The Business Review�s Book of Lists under Fundraising Events as the 17th highest netting fundraiser. And we are actually the second highest netting golf tournament! This is directly attributed to the generosity of our donors and their belief in Saratoga Hospital and the Nursing Scholarship Fund.

Many of its soldiers were Irish revolutionaries who, after the Civil War, as members of the Fenian Brotherhood, launched several invasions of Canada. Canada was then a British colony. The Fenians' aim was to seize Canadian territory and hold it until England gave Ireland her freedom. As commander of the American Army, and later as President, Grant had to oppose his old comrades-in-arms. Find out about this lost chapter of American history and how it effected Grant's career. IN groups of two you will learn how to forge the hammer blank, slit the hole with 250 pound Little Giant, drift with a striker, and draw out the peen on the Little Giant. Heat treating will also be covered in this class, and the students will walk away with their very own hand made hardened forging hammer. Power hammer experience is a must. With Bonnie Hoag. Two half- day workshops run from 9am - 12pm and from 1pm - 4pm. Participants may attend one or both. This workshop will explore Sound & Meaning through the Medium of Words and within Unexpected Contexts: the �wilds� of SAW in the morning and the USUK iron pour in the afternoon. The morning workshop will consist of playful sound and aroma writing exercises followed by a walk around SAW�s property, then time for writing and sharing work. The afternoon workshop will begin with exploring the magic of etymology and let it shape contexts for writing. Participants will then watch the Iron Pour on SAW�s campus � the second context. More writing and discussion will be followed by dinner. Meals are included in the fee and after dinner Bonnie will read her writing and invite all workshop participants to share what came out of the day�s experiments. Dress comfortably for an easy hike. Bring paper/pen/pencil and a dictionary which includes etymologies after entries. Each weekend the class will concentrate on a particular aspect such as blowing bubbles, vessel making or color application. The class will then try out the techniques as a group. Each student will have the chance to work one on one with an instructor, creating a finished piece to take home. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas, a lot of energy and patience. Students must wear closed toe shoes, long sleeved and thick cotton or denim long pants. Riders chose between two scenic routes: a 15 mile ride, suitable for recreational riders, that stays east of the Hudson, and a 35 mile loop for intermediate riders that crosses the river and enters the Battlefield. Both routes include interesting stops at farms and historical sites, and a post-ride picnic featuring the delicious bounty of our local farms. Tour de Farm is not only an enjoyable bike ride to local farms and interesting historic sites; it is also a wonderful way to show support for our region�s health: the health of our community, land, farms, and local economies. Join us at the 2nd annual Saratoga Horse & Tack Expo, a celebration of horses hosted by the New York Horse Park. Visit the covered vendor, used tack sale, not-for-profit and organization areas on the lower level of the Saratoga Race Course Grandstand, participate in the give-aways, a silent auction, raffles of donated items/gift certificates and watch the kids enjoy their own "fun activities" area. This year we are expanding all of these activities and adding a breed parade, a carriage parade, on track demos of a variety of Western, English and other equine activities, and pony rides for the kids. Guy McLean, Master Horseman and award winning Outback Poet from Australia and the 2011 "Road to the Horse" Co- Champion, will again be our headliner. He will be doing three shows each day, including 'starting" a young horse on Saturday and completing the process on Sunday. The Expo is also an opportunity for horse lovers and the community to learn more about the New York Horse Park, Inc. as NYHP Inc., a 501(c)(3) corporation, continues to raise funds to purchase land.for the horse park. A site location map and a conceptual drawing of the NY Horse Park will be on display at the Expo.

A fall race will give runners the opportunity to experience fall foliage in the Northeast. Vans of runners will start the new course in Saratoga Springs, run along the Hudson and Adirondack Lakes, through the region of Lake George and finish in Lake Placid, New York. Ragnar Relay encourages its participants to break the chains of traditional running races by dressing up, decorating their vans, creating life-long memories and having a blast for 30 plus hours. Each Ragnar Relay course is 180 to 200 miles long, divided into 36 legs. Each participant runs three of the 36 legs, in consecutive order. A slap bracelet acts as the relay baton that runners hand off after their section of the course. This leapfrogging pattern continues to the finish where teams are greeted with a finish line party worthy of such stamina, courage and teamwork. Hundreds of teams across the nation have joined together to take on the Ragnar challenge. Join the overnight running relay series that tests the limits of you and your friends over 200 miles. Registration is now open for Ragnar Relay Adirondacks.
